Galen Williams invites Merton to attend a poetry reading, the International Poets at Lincoln Center Festival '68, in New York. The roster of six foreign poets included many whom Merton had praised and some who were his friends– Zbigniew Herbert, Czeslaw Milosz, Jorge Carrera Andrade and Nicanor Parra. Despite his keen interest in attending, Merton had pledged to severely limit his travel, but hoped some could visit him at Gethsemani.
