Merton writes to Cardinal Suenens telling of the importance of the contemplative vocation in monasticism. He suggests some possible ways that monks could have a role in teaching and preaching outside the monastery, but states that it should be very limited and not interfere with a monks primary vocation of prayer and solitude. Cardinal Suenens responds in appreciation of Merton's letter.
Leo Jozef Cardinal Suenens was Archbishop of Mechelen, Belgium, and one of the principle architects of much of the work of the Second Vatican Council.
