Scope and Content

John Sullivan wrote a letter to the editor in defense of the play, "The Deputy: A Christian Tragedy" by Rolf Hochhuth, which criticized Pope Pius XII, charging that he failed to speak out properly to end the Holocaust in Germany. He quotes a line of Merton in relation to other current events of his day, sharing Merton's horror at the idea of "wip[ing] out Bolshevism with the H-Bomb".
