Scope and Content

Erling Thunberg invites Merton to participate as a sponsor in the International Center for Integrative Studies (ICIS) Forum for Correspondence and Contact with a number of other scholars in various fields. Merton asks not to be listed in the field of theology or religion, but rather philosophy or as an "author and poet". Also, he lists problems that concern him: "war and peace; relation of modern literature to religious wisdom; significance of the contemplative life today; psychology of religious experience; eastern and western mysticism, and their relevance to each other; also-- non-professionally-- questions related to ecology and the disturbance of ecological balance by ill-considered use of technology."

Biography
