Scope and Content
Fr. Philip M. Solem wrote Merton a note while visiting the Abbey of Gethsemani and asks if Merton would meet with him. It seems he met with Merton on March 14, 1968 (Merton's published journals list the name as indecipherable, but the date and other details match). Solem was against the Vietnam War. He wrote a pamphlet he distributed to Duluth High School Senior boys in which he urged them to resist the draft and not to participate in the war.
Biography
Fr. Philip M. Solem was assistant pastor at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Parish in Duluth, Minnesota. He was 28 at this time.
