Scope and Content

Werblowsky first came into contact with Merton through Zalman Schachter in 1963. At this time, Werblowsky was visiting professor at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Werblowsky visited Gethsemani Abbey and gave talks to the novices. Werblowsky had experience with Zen masters and was impressed with Merton's grasp of Zen.

Biography

Raphael Jehudah Zwi Werblowsky is a scholar of comparative religion. He was born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1924. He taught at Manchester and Leeds Universities in England before going to Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 1962.
