1967/02/20 TLSto MertonMay I break into that profound solitude of which you speak so inspiringly in your books? I come to studying her community as directed by the Second Vatican Council to determine future directions or changes to religious life, aggiornamento - studying observance of community silence and "theological orientation" / if she quotes Merton, others will say that his ideas only apply to contemplatives - they have active teaching ministry
1967/03/02 TL[c]from MertonI just got out of the hospital and can't type much, or well. I will try to be clear and brief on old attitudes toward silence "promoted a kind of pious deaf mutism" / religious are entitled to a life with the privilege of silence / flexibility to allow space for silence for some, while respecting those who will be "oppressed" by it / knowing the time and place for silence in monastic life / need for silence in active orders
1967/03/22 TALSto MertonTo say that I am grateful to you, Father, is a classic understatement put tritely! But I am deeply need for the silence in religious life that Merton describes in New Seeds of Contemplation and Thoughts in Solitude / Merton should state opinions openly and "Maybe you would shock THE CATHOLIC REPORTER INTO A MUCH NEEDED SILENCE on many topics." / Merton's Mid-Lenten letter on community board
