Edward Kikama asks Merton in 1963 permission to translate The Sign of Jonas into Japanese. Merton grants him permission to translate a number of works into Japanese. They primarily discuss the translations, but they also discuss the meeting of Eastern and Western religion and culture in the Japan of the day and lament the Vietnam War.
