Scope and Content
R. Geoffrey Wilkes had read Merton's article "A Devout Meditation in Memory of Adolf Eichmann" in Peace News. Wilkes believed that war was no longer a tool of justice, but he wondered what Merton's response was to those who claimed war was necessary to stop Communism. He also asks what Merton meant in Seeds of Contemplation about "avoiding amusements". Merton responds to war and Communism, and he clarified the difference between healthy enjoyments and the "cult of pleasure".
Biography
