Scope and Content
This file contains a letters to and from Merton, and a letter sent to Bishop Thomas J. Drury of San Angelo, Texas. They concern the establishment of retreat center for priest around San Angelo and with the help of Fr. Bernard Sylvanus de Aguira, O.C.S.O. They also proposed that Merton be the leader of this group of priest living a contemplative and eremitical life temporarily and while on retreat. Merton responds that he is interested in helping struggling priest and likes the retreat idea, but states that he would not be allowed to leave Gethsemani for such an endeavor. He also thinks the idea of trying to make it true contemplative life is too ambitious and confuses the end results. He suggests focusing on retreats for priests.
