Scope and Content
In these letters, Chadwick and Merton exchanged letters concerning Celtic monasticism. Chadwick had written on the subject and Merton wanted to know more and to look into writing an article on the subject. Merton saw in Chadwick a desire for solitude similar to many in religious life and discussed the debate between those interested in a more "active life" versus those more interested in contemplation.
Biography
In the introduction to her letters, Br. Patrick Hart says of Nora Chadwick that she was a professor at Cambridge University and "had written a number of books on Celtic monasticism which Merton found very attractive" (Source: The School of Charity, p. 217).
