Scope and Content
These files were kept at Gethsemani and pertain to the time period after Merton's death. Gethsemani Abbey wrote to the Temple of Understanding, a non-profit organization promoting understanding between world religions headquartered in Washington, D.C., to obtain information about the speech Merton delivered to one of its meetings. Merton addressed the first of the organization's "Spiritual Summit Conferences," which was held in Calcutta, India, October 22-26, 1968. His paper was titled "Monastic Experience and the East West Dialogue."
