Scope and Content
Egerton asks whether Merton would write some impressions of Will Campbell for an article he is writing. Merton writes back with some humorous and some serious remarks about Will Campbell's visit to Gethsemani in 1965 and earlier in 1967. He discusses their throwing rocks at beer cans at the lake and debates about Johnny Cash versus Bob Dylan. He calls Campbell "a true Southerner who wants the word of God to be heard without muffling and without distortion in the South so that hatred and bloodshed may be replaced by reconciliation and brotherhood."
Biography
John Egerton was writing on behalf of the Southern Education Report.
