1957/07/25 (#01)TL[c] from Fox, James / to Jane NewboldWe received your several letters of July 2 together with the 2 contracts-- all of which arrived Portuguese rights for The Ascent to Truth / Spanish rights for Obras Completas - should be "complete prose works"
1957/07/25 (#02)TLS from Br. Simon / to Ronald BarkerWe received your note of July 17 together with the contract for SELECTED POEMS AND TEARS OF THE Italian rights for Tears of the Blind Lions and Selected Poems
1957/07/29 TALS[x] from Fox, James / to Naomi Burton StoneWe received your note of July 5. Please pardon the delay. I have been away visiting our western
1957/07/29 TALS[x] from Fox, James / to Naomi Burton StoneWe received your note of July 5. Please pardon the delay. I have been away visiting our western Secular Journal - censorship - Catherine Doherty / two sentences were missing from the English language edition of The Silent Life / request from a nun in Brazil [likely Sr. Irmã Emmanuel de Souza e Silva - rights for Bread in the Wilderness] / Merton and the relatively eremetical life
1957/07/31 TLS from Stone, Naomi Burton / to James FoxThanks very much for your letter of July 29th and for the contract for BASIC PRINCIPLES which I'm contract for Basic Principles of Monastic Spirituality / missing sentences from The Silent Life
1957/10/04 TLS from Stone, Naomi Burton / to James FoxThank you so much for the lovely card from Citeaux. We appreciated it. I wonder if you are back now.
1957/10/14 TL[c] from Fox, James / to Naomi Burton StoneYour letter of October 4 was received and forwarded to me. One of our Abbots died in Paris. He was death of Trappist while in Paris - Dom Robert McGann, Abbot of Our Lady of the Holy Ghost in Conyers, Georgia / controversy with censors and with Abbot General Gabriel Sortais regarding the publication of The Secular Journal
1957/10/16 TALS from Stone, Naomi Burton / to James FoxMany thanks for your letter and this is just to let you know that the six copies of NO MAN IS AN No Man Is an Island / Catherine Doherty - The Secular Journal
1957/10/18 TL[c] from Fox, James / to Naomi Burton StoneThis will be just a short note, dear Naomi. Father Louis was remarking to me the other day, "What's asking status of 37 Meditations (published in 1958 as Thoughts in Solitude) - asking if Dom Jean Lecercq had published them in France - Merton wants to check manuscript again before publication
1957/10/22 TALS from Stone, Naomi Burton / to James FoxAs far as 37 MEDITATIONS go here, nothing is happening at the moment. I know that Father Louis has asking status of 37 Meditations (published in 1958 as Thoughts in Solitude) - Dom Jean Lecercq - "Father Louis has got a 'thing' about them" - Bob Giroux and Stone think book is good and worry that The Secular Journal will not pass censors
1957/11/06 TL[x] from Doherty, Catherine / to Naomi Burton StoneYour letter, which I just read from my return from Rome and the Lay Congress there and the many long news about The Secular Journal being held up by censors "has been quite a blow" - "in absolute dire need of money"
1957/11/11 TLS from Stone, Naomi Burton / to James FoxI wonder how the fourth censor is getting along. I'm enclosing, for your eyes, a copy of a letter [Stone enclosing November 6, 1957 letter from Catherine Doherty - previous record in file]
1957/12/23 TALS from Stone, Naomi Burton / to James FoxI'm rather distressed about a letter I have received from Father Louis of December 16th and one distressed by a letter from Merton of December 16 telling her that he has "unofficially" heard that Dom Gabriel Sortais does not want The Secular Journal published / Thirty Seven Meditations (Thoughts in Solitude) - Merton thinks original notes are better than September 1956 manuscript - Stone and Giroux disagree
1957/12/31 (#01)TLS from Stone, Naomi Burton / to James FoxThank you so very much from both of us for the lovely Christmas cake and the calendar and your
1957/12/31 (#02)TLS from Mowat, Elizabeth / to James FoxIn August you sent Miss Newbold a leter from Sr. Emmanuel da Virgem C.V. regarding Portuguese rights Portugese rigths in Brazil for: Bread in the Wilderness, Marthe, Marie et Lazare, The Last of the Fathers, and The Living Bread - Editoria Vozes Ltda. And AGIR / sending German edition of The Ascent to Truth and The Sign of Jonas to Dr. H. Madera in Austria
1958/01/04 TALS[x] from Fox, James / to Naomi Burton StoneWe owe you several letter-- going back to Ancient Greek and Roman time, almost. My, I see one here Dom Jean Leclercq returned French mansucript of "Thirty Seven Meditations" - draft of Thoughts in Solitude - Merton softening on Giroux and Stone's thoughts on book / permission to give Catherine Doherty $500 advance on The Secular Journal / Br. John Thevervelil, St. Josephs's Apostolic Seminary in South India - asking rights to No Man Is an Island in Malayalam language
1958/01/08 TALS[x] from Fox, James / to Naomi Burton StoneWe received your delightful note of December 31. I see you wanted to end the first disappearing year Dom Giabbani intending to make another visit and to see Merton - another friend of Giabbani's in Los Angeles wants to use an extract of The Silent Life to advertise the Camaldolese - confusion between Gethsemani Trappist and Camaldolese if Merton used in this way
1958/01/28 (#01)TLS from Stone, Naomi Burton / to James FoxI see that under the contract for the book that was called THIRTY-SEVEN MEDITATIONS but is now advance for Thoughts in Solitude
1958/01/28 (#02)TL[c] from McCallum, J. H. / to Naomi Burton StoneI hardly need tell you about the precipitous rise in manufacturing costs. But I am forced to tell [from J. H. McCallum of Harcourt, Brace publishers] need to either raise the price of No Man Is an Island or cap its royalties percentage due to increased costs of production and printing
1958/01/30 TLS from Stone, Naomi Burton / to James FoxI'm attaching a copy of a letter from Harcourt Brace. I feel sure that it would be beneficial advising Fox to keep the price of No Man Is an Island at $3.95 and to cap percentage of royalties instead
1958/02/03 TL[c] from Fox, James / to Naomi Burton StoneWe received your most charming letter of January 28 in regard to that advance "on demand". Thoughts in Solitude / telling many people asking for prefaces, introductions, etc. that Merton is not in a writing mode but is putting out older manuscripts / agrees with Stone's suggestion of keeping price of No Man Is an Island at $3.95 and to capping percentage of royalties
1958/02/13 TLS from Stone, Naomi Burton / to MertonI've had the following from Dell concerning the Dale Francis book: "I'm answering your letter regarding a letter to Frank Taylor - introduction to a Catholic prayer book - citing Fox granting permission to use a portion of Merton's "A Balanced Life of Prayer"
1958/02/15 TLS[x] from Fox, James / to Naomi Burton StoneJust a few lines for now.. Things move strangely in monastic circles! As regards the SECULAR JOURNAL The Secular Journal - approval by Dom Gabriel Sortais under condition of removing certain parts to which the censors objected and adding a new preface
1958/02/18 TALS from Stone, Naomi Burton / to James FoxI am stunned though I should be used to these extraordinary happening, shouldn't I. The Secular Journal - possibility of having to re-start censorship process with no guarantees of publication - Merton's feelings and those of Caherine Doherty / thinks that Merton would "shudder" at requests from Lady's Home Journal and This Week asking quotes from Thoughts in Solitude
1958/02/20 TALS from Stone, Naomi Burton / to James FoxNed clipped this out of the New York Times for you. And I thought it would make a very suitable
