1. Mimeographed Poem D.2 Merton, Thomas, 1915-1968; 1985 Eighteen poems This file contains two versions of "Evening: Long Distance Call," one with the earlier title "Long Distance Call at Night." One is titled in this draft "Three Night Letters," but contains six and is published as "Six Night Letters." Thirteen of the original eighteen poems were republished in the volume In the Dark before Dawn: New Selected Poems of Thomas Merton, edited with an introduction and notes by Lynn R. Szabo; preface by Kathleen Norris (New York: New Directions, 2005), pp. 188-219. Not included were "The Harmonies of Excess," which is not in this file and originally published in Cables to the Ace; "Certain Proverbs Arise out of Dreams" and "A Long Call Is Made out of Wheels," which appear in the journal Learning to Love; and "Two Songs for M." and "Gethsemani, May 66," which were only published in the book Eighteen Poems. «detailed view» -->
