|I agree with you on your dislike of fiction and can't read most novels even when I try, but now I am well into an enormous one, [Jose Maria] Gironella's great, laconic (yet enormous) novel of the Spanish Civil War, One Million Dead. I think it is something everyone should read, though it starts slow and has thousands of characters.
