QuotationI think the best modern poetry is being written in France, has been for the last fifty years. Between 1880 and 1920 perhaps the only good poetry was being written there. This week, for the first time I read the Complaintes of Jules Laforgue: or some of them. They are very fine and very moving: more moving than anything in Enlish since then, except by Yeats. I make a big exception for Yeats, because he is very good, too.
