| Quotation | Am reading Camus's L'Etat de siège [State of Siege]. The whole Plague theme is one of the best and most powerful things in his work. The heart of it. Perhaps there is much wrong with this play, but to me it reads well anyway and I like it. A medieval morality play, hence inevitably naive, rambunctious, untidy, and probably not as controlled as he hoped. I suppose one must overlook faults in it - musical comedy atmosphere of the "leading juveniles" - . Was he having trouble with the color, verve, vitality of it? (Better when his plays are somber - Le Malentendu.) I don't know. He liked it and I like it. My heart is with Camus. Thought is going to publish "Three Saviors." |
