Merton asks the help of Dom Marie-Joseph in getting a transfer of monasteries for Fr. Francisco Solano Canedo from Gethsemani Abbey to a French monastery. He wanted this inquiry to remain secret because Merton did not feel he had the support of his abbot, Dom James, nor the Trappist abbot general, Dom Gabriel Sortais. Fr. Francisco Solano was a Bolivian, but came to Gethsemani from Argentina.
Dom Marie-Joseph Marquis was Abbot of Notre Dame de Grâce in Bricquebec, France, from 1940-1981.
