Br. Thomas Qualey notes that Merton has signed a petition published in the March 29th edition of The National Catholic Reporter. Qualey believes that the United States was fighting the Vietnam War for the right reasons, that there was no way to leave at this point, and that certain negative effects are inevitable in war. Merton disputes this and other rationales for war in two letters to Qualey.
Br. Thomas Qualey writes from the Christian Brothers' Scholasticate in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

I can't afford time to argue in detail about the points you raise. Perhaps I may do so in print, |
