Merton had apparently spoken during a discussion at Gethsemani in support of the Civil Rights Movement and been critical of not enough involvement from the leadership of the Catholic Church. Fr. Hubert seemed to express the opposing side to Merton's view, but there are no letters from Fr. Hubert in the file.
John Reiser (then Fr. Hubert) was a Trappist of Gethsemani Abbey.
