Scope and Content

Much of the correspondence concerns matters of censorship and is exclusively written in French. Merton needed to get the official declaration from the abbot general of Imprimi Potest (Latin for "it may be published"). Prior to this, censors (usually two) reviewed the work and gave it the mark of Nihil Obstat (Latin for "nothing preventing" [publication]), stating that there were no errors concerning doctrine or morals. This is part of the Imprimatur process (Latin for "let it be printed"), the final indication of approval.

Biography

Dom Gabriel Sortais was Abbot General of the Cistercians of the Strict Observance (Trappists) from 1951-1963.
