Mariann Vail was distraught by the recent assassinations of Robert Kennedy, John F. Kennedy, and Martin Luther King, Jr. She felt she should do some kind of penance to counter the violence of these acts, but was not Catholic and asked Merton for some instruction. Merton gives her some suggestions.
Mariann Vail writes from Richmond, Indiana.
