Merton asks Fr. Chrysogonus to obtain some books for him in Rome. However, Merton also is interested in news from monks in Rome about the proceedings of the Second Vatican Council. In addition, they discuss the future of the eremitical life in cenobitic monastic orders, the state of some monasteries in Europe, and a trip by Waddell to St. Antonin, the area of southern France where Merton was born.
Fr. Chrysogonus Waddell is a Trappist monk of Gethsemani Abbey who was studying in Rome at the time of this correspondence.
