This collection contains an early original letter to Merton from 1948, a letter from John Brown to Caillard regarding censorship of a book about escaping Nazi occupied France while the war was still in progress, and a series of citizenship and naturalization papers related to Caillard. It is possible that Merton was interested in Caillard's World War II escape story, and/or that Caillard saw Merton as someone to help him get his story published.

Caillard's escape story must be censored before publication for security reasons during World War II / no details of how he escaped, places he'd been, or who helped him can be included / Brown, from the Scottish Command H.Q., believes that the "meat" of the story would be lost if these parts were removed
