Ludovico Silva, a Venezuelian author, professor, poet, and the editor of Papeles, asked Merton for an account of his day as a hermit. Merton responded in May of 1965 with the first version of this poetic essay. First published in Spanish in Papeles in 1966, it was revised for the English translation in The Hudson Review in 1967.
