In December 1941, immediately before entering Gethsemani Abbey, Thomas Merton gave a collection of writings to Msgr. Richard F. Fitzgerald, at the time a seminarian at St. Bonaventure in New York. The collection was donated to St. Bonaventure University in 1974 and copied for the Merton Center in 1995. It contains 21 folders, including manuscripts of early novels, "Straits of Dover" and "The Man in the Sycamore Tree;" poems; notes on Dante's Divine Comedy; reviews of Aldous Huxley's Grey Eminence and Eyeless in Gaza; drawings; brief religious essays (vocations to the lay apostolate, etc.); journals of 1940 trips to Miami and to Cuba; and a letter addressed to "the Baroness" Catherine de Hueck Doherty and others at Friendship House in New York City. See also files kept before the holographic journals in Sub-Section C.1.
