The provenance of this letter from Eugene Rose (later Fr. Seraphim Rose) is not certain. References to such a letter, questioning whether it was sent to Merton or not, can be found in Not This World: The Life and Teaching of Fr. Seraphim Rose by Damascene Christensen (1993). The reference is listed on page 1016 under an unpublished book by Rose entitled Nihilism: The Root of the Revolution of the Modern Age, and Other Early Writings of Fr. Seraphim Rose. The full text of the letter was printed from the Web site of Orthodox Christian Information Center, administered by Patrick Barnes, to demonstrate an orthodox critique of Merton and in a section against ecumenism ‹http://www.orthodoxinfo.com/ecumenism/merton.aspx›.
At the time of writing the letter, Eugene Rose had recently converted to Russian Orthodoxy. He would later become an Orthodox priest and monk, living in his native California.
