Merton responds to Sr. Lois Simmons' idea of founding a contemplative house within her active order and offers suggestions. He recommends that they should not feel constrained by some of the rigid customs of traditional contemplative communities, that they should avoid turning contemplative exercises into active work, and that contemplation should contribute to the psychological, theological, and aesthetic life of the community.
Sr. Lois Marie Simmons was a Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary from Richmond, Virginia.
