Merton wrote a letter to Stephen Spiro's local draft board to petition them to recognize his stance against the Vietnam War. Spiro writes to say that his request was denied but that he had received additional support from a number of prominent peace activists, including the Daniel and Philip Berrigan, Tom Cornell, Jim Forest and John Heidbrink.
Stephen J. Spiro was a conscientious objector who was drafted for the Vietnam War. He continues to help those who chose to resist the draft and to work for peace in the Fellowship of Reconciliation. He writes to Merton from Bogotá, New Jersey.
