John Stanley took issue with Dorothy Day's support for Distributist philosophy and voluntary works of charity rather than a Communist economic model. A former admirer of Merton, he later thought that Merton's books were "little Birchite booklets wedged into the texts of even pious meditations."
John Stanley was a former novice at Gethsemani Abbey. He worked for a number of years with Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker Movement. He was a friend of another ex-novice from Gethsemani and fellow Catholic Worker, Robert Steed.
