Fr. William Johnston was an Irish Jesuit and scholar in the realm of mysticism and the East-West dialog. In 1951, he moved to Japan and was a professor at Sophia University in Tokyo while writing to Merton. He has written many books on mysticism and the Christian encounter with Zen.
